The white pupa whistles

19950h 50m

A close friend of mine—the same age as me—left Japan to marry an 80-year-old American man living in Hawaii. This is a personal documentary in which I visit her, navigate the distance between us, and reflect on my own life in Japan. My friend Kimiyo and I spent our twenties together. Whenever we had a spare moment, we would go to movies or plays, share our reactions, and talk endlessly. Then, one day, she told me she had grown bored with life in Japan and left the country. Five years later, I received word that she had gotten married—to an 80-year-old American man living in Hawaii. I decided to visit her there, hoping we could talk. Yet, as we spoke and tried to understand one another, the distance between us only grew, and I was struck once again by the solitude of my own life in Japan.
